Deborah on Faculty of 2019 Spring Writer’s Retreat

February 27, 2019

I’m pleased to be on the faculty of SCBWI-Southern California’s “2019 Spring Writer’s Retreat” for Middle Grade & Young Adult fiction at Tahquitz Pines in Idyllwild on April 12 – 14, 2019. I’m really looking forward to getting away, both as an editor (my role during the day for the writers I’ve been brought in for) and as an author (what I’ll be doing on my own time each evening).

Wherever you write is supposed to be a little bit of a refuge, a place where you can get away from the world. The more closed in you are, the more you’re forced back on your own imagination.

~Stephen King

Stephen King was talking about one’s everyday writing space. But sometimes you need a little help to get that space “away from the world.” Writers retreats help you do that. You get writing time, and you get communal time when you want it, and when the retreat hosts bring in guest speakers, you get craft sessions to help you do what you do best even better.

My esteemed fellow faculty for this retreat are

  • Pam Gruber, Senior Editor Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
  • Erika Turner, Editor- Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Trade
  • Kari Sutherland, Agent at Bradford Literary Agency
  • Jennifer Azantian, Agent at Azantian Literary

The three-day, two-night retreat is full now, but they do have a cancellations list in case that sounds like something you’re interested in.
