It’s gotta be weird to pop into a bookstore during your vacation and walk smack into a table of books with grinning hot dog faces on them, and then see some lady grinning at you from between the stacks with an equally goofy grin. But 14-year-old Monica of North Carolina went with the moment last week at my first BIG MOUTH signing at Borders in Downtown San Diego,
stopping her mom so she could chat with me about hot dogs and vacation hot spots in San Diego and the books she herself is writing. Not only does Monica dream of seeing her own books on store shelves some day, but it turns out her sister is thinking about becoming an editor after college. I like this family.
Monica and crew: As promised, here are the two publishing institutes that I told you about. Anyone aspiring to a career in the publishing world would do well to check them out:
University of Denver’s Publishing Institute
New York University’s Summer Publishing Institute
Good luck to your sister and to you. I hope your writing continues to go well. Definitely keep up the reading, too. One of the best ways to become a great writer is to be a voracious reader. I hope BIG MOUTH will be a fun step in your journey to the shelves and that one day you’ll find yourself sitting behind a stack of books with a dopey, amazed grin on your face, too. Believe me, dreams do come true.
